Writing Reflection
Writing, as Wallace conveys, is a delicate craft. In order to establish a connection between the reader and writer that has "an electricity about it", the writer must remember that the reader cannot read his/her mind. Wallace notes that effective writing is remembering that you are trying to communicate with someone else. You aren't writing for yourself, but rather, the reader. He also prefers to write his drafts by hand because writing forces him to slow down in a way that can't be achieved by typing. Furthermore, the first draft will never be the best. Even an esteemed writer like Wallace admits that if he wants his writing to be interesting, he has to work for it. The gifted writers aren't always best writers, because practice is just as important.

Good interpretation of Wallace's quotes. I like that you focused on using writing as a form of communication. It's important to remember that our work is truly for the reader when we write.
ReplyDeleteI think the idea that the first draft will never be the best is incredibly reassuring. A lot of the times I'll write something and feel like it is incompetent. However, I have to remind myself that I can't hold my first draft to final draft standards.
ReplyDeleteI think you covered the base of what Wallace was talking about, and combined multiple quotes together. It's pretty well tied together, good job.
