Marcus Garvey

    • As a child, his father said that he was "severe, firm, determined, bold, and strong, refusing to yield even to superior forces if he believed he was right."
    • Formed his own shipping company, The Black Star Line, to provide transportation back to Africa for African-Americans.
    • Founded the “Universal Negro Improvement Association” dedicated to promoting African-Americans resettlement in Africa.
    • Was born in Jamaica and moved to England to become a printer’s apprentice, where he took part in an unsuccessful printer’s strike. This caused him to have an interest in political issues.
    • Declared the first Jamaican national hero
