Collins Response

Don't be afraid to dig for meaning

Push the shovel into a poem's words
When you hit a rock, don't immediately discard it
See if it has something to say

You don't need to be violent
Just a little push and shove
The journey is not all about the treasure at the end

Yet at the same time
You are allowed to anticipate its presence
And look forward to it

The treasure of understanding won't fall into your hands
It's buried deep inside
between the lines and spaces
between the rocks and stones

It isn't torturing a poem
To want to know what it means
