Poetry is meant to be read. Explored. Understood.
There is an intention behind every word.
Every rhyme and every rhythm has a purpose.
So we are told.
The first time we read, we just take in the words.
We feel a tone and try to put some pieces together.
The next time we struggle to understand what is happening.
So we read it again and then hope for more.
Then we write an essay about devices used.
Devices we caught on our second read through.
But then we have to explain what that says
about the meaning of the work as a whole.
And how are we to know the meaning,
If we are not allowed to analyze more?
