PLACES IN BELOVED

With your partner or partners, you will make one audio recording and post it to the blog.

Title: PLACES IN BELOVED

Labels: Your Names, BELOVED

You may use Vocaroo.com if you wish (you can get embed code after the recording). BE SURE TO TEST YOUR AUDIO LEVELS BY PRACTICING A FEW TIMES -- depending on your laptop and the distance you are from the mic, it may be too loud or barely audible.

If you have other means of recording (iPhone, etc.) and can upload to the blog via YouTube or other means, then go for it. You are free to make AUDIO or VIDEO (your choice).*

*People who make videos will have first choice of Capri Sun flavor today.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

1. MOWW
Write a one-line MOWW for the novel.

2. CHOOSE 3 LOCATIONS
Decide on 3 different deeply significant locations in the novel. The more specific, the better. E.g., instead of 124 Bluestone, you could refer to the store room, etc.

3. GOLDEN LINES
For each of the 3 locations, find one Golden Line (a quote) that captures a moment (internal or external). This moment should enhance our understanding of the MOWW in some way.

4. RESPOND AND INTERPRET
Have a conversation with your partner about the line you've chosen. Answer these questions together. (You might have one of you play interviewer and the other respond, or take turns, or announce the question and then have a spontaneous dialogue in response -- you decide).

  • Who says this line?
  • How does this line resonate with other moments/scenes in the novel?
  • What language in this line is significant to you and why?
  • What nuance or shades of meaning can you unpack from this line?

5. IMAGES
As part of your post, insert images for the places you've chosen. These images should not necessarily be literal. Caption each image with the name of the place it represents.

For the recording:

Sketch out your plan in writing before you begin, but don't just read from a script. Work to have an organic, spontaneous conversation too.

If you are having trouble completing everything in one take, feel free to make three separate recordings (one for each location).

State your names (e.g., This is Joe. And I'm Sam. And we're going to explore some of the important places in Beloved and do some interpretation today).

One by one, tell us which location you are focusing on, explain your golden line, then respond and interpret the questions for that line.

Repeat until you have completed all 3 locations.

Wrap up your recording by discussing any new discoveries you made about the MOWW or anything else related to the novel.

You have 60 minutes to complete this assignment and post to the blog.

Feel free to work outside. Or in the back media room. Make space away from other teams.

May the force be with you.
