"One of the things that’s good about writing and practicing writing is it’s a great remedy for my natural self-involvement and self-centeredness."
--David Foster Wallace
Wallace argues that, although students tend to think good writing is an ingrained part of them, it requires an immense amount of practice and precision. Being a good writer involves a certain sense of self and presence in the world; doing so allows us to reflect on what befalls us in life. Those who see writing as a chore or task fail to understand how writing is more of a "matter of spirit than of intellect."
I strive to gain a broader understanding of my surroundings before I write anything. Being observant, self-reflective, and open-minded often places us in a favorable position to write well. Rather than write with the intention of completion, I hope to write as a means of self-exploration. We write in order to fathom the mundane confusion we face in our convoluted world.
I like the idea of completion versus self-exploration. Definitely something I constantly need to remind myself.
